When you are preparing for your new baby’s arrival it is paramount that you sleep your baby on a new, firm, clean, and dry mattress.
Many people are tempted to buy second hand cots and mattresses to try to save money. However, as stated in our article ‘reducing the risk of SIDS‘ second hand mattresses (from outside your home) have been connected to a higher risk of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome), although not definitively proven, is it really worth taking the risk? Obviously if you have a second or third child and your current mattress is still in good condition, then by all means use it. Just check that the condition is still good, that it is still firm and there are no holes or fraying.
The lullaby trust recommend that you have a waterproof mattress so that if it gets dirty or wet it can be wiped down and dried. A lot of organic mattresses may not come with a waterproof covering, however you can buy a separate waterproof mattress protector (which is highly recommended).
We recommend a natural or organic mattress for your new baby as you can then ensure that only the most natural products have been used to make it, without any harsh chemicals, toxins or dyes.
It is important that you double check what size your cot is, as there are varying sizes of Moses basket, travel cot, cot, and cot-bed. Ensure that you purchase the right size as having a mattress that is too small could increase the risk of SIDS if your baby could fall between the mattress and the cot.
I have not personally owned any of these organic baby mattresses, however I did have a similar one for both Jack and Jessica. For our best organic baby mattress list I have used recommendations and researched and analysed the companies claims and the reviews of people who have bought them

As we discovered in our article ‘reducing the risk of SIDS’ One of the two risk areas for new babies are old mattresses or mattresses that do not fit the cot properly and keeping your baby’s temperature in between 16 and 20 degrees Celsius.
It is essential that your new baby has a new mattress that fits your cot exactly, to reduce the risk of your baby slipping between the mattress and the cot. It is also essential that the mattress is firm and in excellent condition.
